Health and wellbeing are not just about glugging back kale smoothies!

​After the indulgence of the chaggim, the start of the New Year can feel like a real slog. Everything that you have been putting off until "acharei hachaggim" - gym membership, chuggim for the kids, job searches and bills - is suddenly staring you in the face. It's all too easy to feel overwhelmed, exhausted and anxious.

So many of us are determined to take ourselves in hand - to lose some weight, exercise more, etc, etc but how many will actually stick to this resolution? One reason is that our resolutions generally do not address our overall wellbeing, which is the cornerstone for success. "I'm going to quit smoking / hit the gym / lose 5 kgs or take up tai kwon do" are all perfectly reasonable goals but they each address only a small part of our overall wellness and wellbeing.

Wellbeing is a dynamic process. Taking care of your body and responding to emotions and stress in a healthy, realistic way can create a ripple effect of positive health throughout your life. It is important to look at the concept of health and wellness in a holistic way, regarding the body as one unit and not a composite of many parts. As such, osteopathy and physiotherapy go hand-in-hand in helping to create and maintain a balanced, healthy environment. If you think of your body as a car that needs to be taken care of and maintained on a regular basis in order to keep functioning at an optimum level, you cannot go far wrong.

Take small steps along the way: Eat better. Exercise three times a week. Drink more water. Introducing healthy habits and small changes to your lifestyle can make a noticeable difference to your health in the long run.

But ... be kind to yourself. "No matter how many kale smoothies you grimace through this year, you are going to mess up. You are going to make mistakes and say the wrong thing and sleep through your alarm and mindlessly scroll through social media while eating snacks with zero nutritional value."
